As an Assistant Underwriter Manager, you will oversee and guide a team of underwriters in evaluation of loan applications, ensuring adherence to lending guidelines, and making prudent credit decisions. Your role involves coordinating workflow, providing training, and ensuring the accurate and efficient assessment of borrower creditworthiness, contributing to the overall success of the underwriting department.

Your Responsibilities On The Team
- Leadership and Collaboration: Supervise and collaborate with the Underwriting Manager on all facets of underwriting. Address associate matters to ensure high morale, excellent customer service, and optimization of productivity and quality outputs. Assist Underwriting Manager in addressing issues with Loan Officers, processing, and closing staff. Offer feedback and suggestions for the implementation of new programs, systems, and file flows to enhance underwriting efficiencies.
- Team Cultivation and Training: Cultivate a team-oriented atmosphere for efficient loan underwriting within a customer-friendly environment. Effectively communicate in-person and via telephone to comprehensively train new underwriting associates.
- Onboarding and Orientation: Conduct new hire orientation, acquainting new underwriting associates with company policies, procedures, and history.
- Risk Analysis and Compliance: Manage and mentor underwriting staff in risk analysis, decision-making, and compliance with agency and investor guidelines.
- File Flow Management: Oversee underwriting file flow, ensuring timely decisions and adherence to quantity standards. Utilize Automated Underwriting Systems and/or traditional underwriting methods appropriately.
- Team Building and Support: Coach and foster a professional team effort within the underwriting department. Provide technical support to all underwriting staff, quality control staff, and senior management.
- Decision-making and Quality Control: Assist in making judgmental underwriting decisions for the company. Perform quality control reviews of each underwriter to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Guiding Compliance with Guidelines: Assist Underwriting Manager in keeping underwriters current with changes in investor and agency guidelines.

Excellent Analytical and Problem-Solving Capabilities: Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the organization and services offered to resolve more complex inquiries.
10: Demonstrate knowledge and command: In-depth knowledge of mortgage loan products, lending principles and regulatory compliance. Extensive understanding of mortgage lending principles and underwriting guidelines, including FHA, VA, and conventional loans, loan processing and automated underwriting systems. Working knowledge of mortgage lending principles and underwriting guidelines including self-employed borrowers, partnership and corporation tax return analysis.
Requirements
- Highschool Diploma or Equivalent
- BA or BS preferred
- VA Automatic and DE Designation
- LAPP SAR designation
- Minimum of 8 years in mortgage industry to include at least 5 years of frontline underwriting
- Minimum 1-3 years supervisory and management experience in the mortgage and lending industry (originating, processing, closing and underwriting of FHA/VA/Conventional loans
- 2+ years of experience in mortgage software
- Proficient in using standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)
- Purchase transaction, specifically new construction experience preferred
- Self-starter and able to work independently
- Exceptional organizational abilities, keen attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities
